Mastering the Tormek Multi Base

If you’ve used a Tormek sharpener for any length of time, you know how versatile the system is right out of the box. The standard setup produces sharp, consistent edges on everything from chisels to kitchen knives to turning tools. But what if you want to go beyond the basics to create a flat bevel instead of a hollow grind, or polish your edges to a mirror finish in a different position? That’s where the Tormek MB-102 Multi Base comes in.

Tormek MB-102 Multi Base

This clever accessory changes how you position tools on your Tormek, opening up new possibilities for sharpening and finishing. In this guide, we’ll look at what the MB-102 Multi Base does, why flat bevel sharpening matters, and how to get the most out of this versatile upgrade.

What the Tormek MB-102 Multi Base Does

The MB-102 lets you mount the Universal Support Bar in alternate positions, giving you two main benefits:

  1. Side-on sharpening with Tormek Diamond Wheels
You can use the sides of any Tormek Diamond Wheel to grind a completely flat bevel. (Important: the Standard and Japanese grindstones are not designed for side-on use.)

  2. Edge-trailing sharpening in an upright position
The MB-102 lets you use the Universal Support Bar in an upright position, rather than horizontal, when the wheels are turning away from you. Sharpening edge trailing is essential for using the Japanese Waterstones and the Honing Wheels.

This makes the Multi Base more than just another accessory, it’s a way to expand what your Tormek can do.

Why Flat Bevel Sharpening Matters

Most Tormek users start with the standard setup, which creates a hollow grind. That works well for many tools, but there are situations where a flat bevel is preferable:

  • Chisels and plane irons: A flat bevel sits flush on wood surfaces, giving you more control for precise woodworking tasks.

  • Knives:A flat-ground edge can offer a smoother, thinner cut and is preferred by some chefs and outdoorspeople for durability and performance.
  • Curved tools, like gouges: Many woodworkers prefer a flat radius on the outside of their gouges rather than a hollow grind. It gives the edge more strength and can improve tool control while carving.

With the MB-102, you can choose the edge geometry that works best for your tools and your projects.

Advanced Uses for the MB-102 Multi Base

The MB-102 isn’t just about producing flat bevels, it also helps you take your sharpening to the next level:

  • Sharpening progression with Tormek Diamond Wheels: Start with the coarse wheel, move to fine, then extra fine for a complete side-on sharpening workflow.
  • Polishing with the Japanese Waterstone: Using the Multi Base in the upright, edge-trailing position helps you achieve a mirror polish safely and consistently.

  • Honing wheels for final refinement: The MB-102 provides stability for stropping and honing edges to perfection with the Universal Support Bar set up vertically.

Each of these options builds on the Tormek system you already own, giving you professional-level results at home or in the shop.

Using the MB-102 Multi Base with Tormek Jigs

One of the strengths of the MB102 is how well it works with Tormek’s existing jigs:

  • SE-77 Square Edge Jig: Perfect for creating flat bevels on chisels and plane irons.
  • KJ-45 Knife Jig: Consistent, guided sharpening for knives across the flat face of a diamond wheel.
  • SVD-186R Gouge Jig: Allows woodturners and carvers to sharpen gouges with a stronger, flatter outside radius.

Instead of replacing your current setup, the Multi Base expands it, adding flexibility and precision to the jigs you already use.

Flat Bevel vs. Hollow Grind: Choosing the Right Edge

With the MB-102, you can pick the edge geometry that makes sense for your work:

  • Flat bevel advantages: Stability, durability, and accuracy for woodworking tools and certain knives.
  • Hollow grind advantages: Faster sharpening, easier honing, and often preferred for fine knife edges.

There’s no single “right” choice, the Tormek Multi Base simply gives you the freedom to experiment and decide what works best for you.

Tips for Getting the Most from the Tormek MB-102

If you’re adding the MB-102 Multi Base to your sharpening setup, keep these tips in mind:

  • Clean your diamond wheels regularly: The sides might not completely submerge in the water trough, regular cleaning will make sure they keep cutting fast.
    Refresh Diamond Stones 4
  • Use light pressure: Especially with the Japanese Waterstones or honing wheels; let the abrasive do the work.
  • Switch setups as needed: The MB-102 complements your standard Tormek setup rather than replacing it.
  • Practice makes perfect: Side-on sharpening feels different at first, but you’ll get comfortable quickly.

Unlocking New Sharpening Possibilities

The Tormek MB-102 Multi Base takes an already capable sharpening system and makes it even more versatile, giving you control and options you didn’t have before.

If you want to get the most from your Tormek, the MB-102 Multi Base is a simple upgrade that delivers professional results.
