Questions & Answers

Do ceramic stones require oil or water to use?

Most ceramic stones are designed for dry use and do not require any oil or water. This makes them especially convenient for field use or quick touch-ups since there is no setup or cleanup involved.

How do I clean a ceramic stone that has turned gray or black?

It is normal for ceramic stones to darken over time as metal particles accumulate on the surface. To clean a ceramic stone, scrub the surface with a plastic abrasive pad and a powdered household cleanser such as Comet or Bar Keepers Friend, then rinse with water. The stone will return to its original color. Regular cleaning keeps the surface open and sharpening efficiently.

Are ceramic stones a good choice for hard steels?

Yes, ceramic stones handle hard steels very well. Because ceramic is an extremely hard abrasive material, it can cut steels that would quickly wear down softer abrasives. If you work with high-hardness knives, a ceramic stone is a reliable option that will hold up over time.
