Comparing the Different Naniwa Water Stones

Dan, one of our Sharpening Supplies Sharpening Specialist, describes the features and differences between each of the lines of Naniwa Water Stones. Below we've summarized some of the key features.

Naniwa Professional Water Stone

The Naniwa Professional is the top-of-the-line Naniwa water stone. This is the fastest cutting, has a great wear rate, and offers the most feedback of the Naniwa line. They are available in a grit range of 400 to 10,000 grit. The stones do absorb a small amount of water, so it does take a few splashes of water to prepare them for sharpening. This line of stones was previously called the Chosera Stones.

Naniwa Super Stones

The Naniwa Super Stones are very popular because of their excellent polishing properties. They are available in the widest range of grits, starting at 220 and going all the way up to 12,000 grit. These are resin bonded stones that do not absorb water so they are truly a splash-and-go stone. These stones are available in two thicknesses, the S1 is 3/8" while the S2 is 3/4" thick.

Naniwa Traditional Water Stones

The Naniwa Traidiontal Water Stones are most similar to traditional water stones. They do require soaking before use as they will readily absorb water. They offer good performance in both speed and feedback. They are available in grits ranging from 220 to 8000.

Naniwa Lobster Water Stones

The Naniwa Lobster Water Stones are an economical traditional water stone choice. This line focuses on the most popular 220, 1000, and 3000 grits.
