What is an India Stone?

An India Stone is made from the man-made abrasive aluminum oxide. The term India Stone is a trade name for Norton's Aluminum Oxide sharpening stones. Norton's India stones are orange, tan or brown in color. This distinguishes them from Norton's Crystolon (silicon carbide) Stones which are gray in color. So while all India Stones are aluminum oxide, not all aluminum oxide stones are technically India Stones.

The term "Indian Stone" is sometimes used to describe this type of stone. While it is not necessarily correct, it is a relatively common term used to describe the stones. If you call us and ask for an Indian Stone, we will know exactly what you're talking about.
