What do the numbers on the Edge-On-Up Tester mean?

The Edge-On-Up Testers are a great way, in fact the only way, to get a quantifiable result when testing the sharpness of an edge. They work by measuring the grams of force required to cut a standard test media. The fewer grams of force require to cut the media, the sharper the edge.

The number of grams required to cut the media isn't enough information on its own. The chart below uses the BESS number from the Edge-On-Up Tester and provides a real world examples so you can evaluate your edge.
