What is the advantage of buying a sharpening system or kit versus individual stones?
A sharpening system or kit gives you everything you need to sharpen from start to finish in a single purchase. Most kits include a progression of grits so you can move from coarse material removal all the way through to a refined edge without having to source each abrasive separately. Many systems also include accessories such as honing oil, a storage case, or angle guides, making them a great value for both beginners and experienced sharpeners.
What is a guided sharpening system, and who is it best suited for?
A guided sharpening system is one that has some mechanism for keeping the angle consistent during sharpening. Guided systems are available in powered and manual options. Guided systems are ideal for anyone who wants consistent results and is not confident in their ability to maintain a freehand angle.
How many grits do I need in a sharpening kit?
Three to four grits are common in kits, and suitable for most sharpeners. Having a progression of at least three grits allows for an efficient workflow from coarse abrasives for material removal to fine abrasives edge refinement.
