View full detailsA specially formulated [Honing Oil (https://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/collections/honing-oil)] is the best choice for use with oil stones. Honing oils are the optimal viscosity and do not go rancid or gum up. Avoid using cooking oils or motor oils, as they can become rancid or gum up the stone's pores over time.
It is not recommended to use oil stones without oil. Without oil, metal filings can become embedded in the pores of the stone, causing it to glaze over and lose its cutting ability. Using honing oil keeps the surface clean, improves cutting performance, and extends the life of the stone significantly.
To clean an oil stone, apply a small amount of honing oil and scrub the surface with a stiff brush or cloth to loosen embedded metal particles. Wipe the stone clean and repeat as needed. If the stone has become heavily glazed, soaking the stone in soap and water can help dissolve built-up residue. If the stone is particularly loaded, a stronger solvent like mineral spirits can be used. Store the stone in a case or box to protect it from dust and debris between uses.
