Questions & Answers

What makes natural sharpening stones different from synthetic stones?

Natural sharpening stones are quarried directly from the earth whereas synthetic stones are manufactured objects. Each natural stone has a unique mineral composition that gives it distinct sharpening characteristics. Many sharpeners prize natural stones for the nuanced, refined edges they produce, and for the unique experience of sharpening with them.

Should I use water or oil with natural stones?

It depends on the type of natural stone. Arkansas stones are oil stones and should be used with [Honing Oil (https://www.sharpeningsupplies.com/collections/honing-oil)]. All Japanese and most European natural stones are used with water. Some natural stones may be used with either oil or water. The product description page for each stone will indicate whether to use water or oil with any given stone.

Can natural stones be used to sharpen woodworking tools like chisels and gouges?

Yes, many of the natural stones are well suited for woodworking tools. Arkansas stones in bench stone sizes work well for chisels and plane irons. We also offer several specialty shapes of natural stones, including round-edge slipstones, multiform stones with both a round edge and a 45-degree taper, and v-stones designed for the inside of v-tools and gouges.
