For Use on High Carbon Steel
The Shapton HC Series is designed specifically for high quality high carbon steel tools, knives and straight razors. While the Shapton HR Series GlassStones will sharpen these high carbon steels and do it well, the 4000, 6000 and 8000 HC Stones are particularly effective at polishing high carbon steel edges. Each Shapton HC Series stone measures 8 1/4" long and 2 3/4" wide. Made in Japan.
Choose from the following grit high carbon polishing stones:
4000 Grit HC - The grit particles used on the 4000 HC stone are extremely small so it is to be used to polish edges that have been refined with coarser grits. The grit particle size measure 3.68 microns. While the coarsest of the HC series, this is still a very fine stone. Shapton Part #50603.
6000 Grit HC - The grit particles used on the 6000 HC stone are extremely small and provide a near mirror finish on high carbon steels, so it is to be used to polish edges that have been refined with coarser grits. The grit particle size measure 2.45 microns. Shapton Part #50703.
8000 Grit HC - The grit particles used on the 8000 HC stone are extremely small and provide final finish on high carbon steels, so it is to be used to polish edges that have been refined with coarser grits. The grit particle size measure 1.84 microns. This is the finest of the HC Series Stones. Shapton Part #50803.

Q. Should I get the HR Series or the HC Series of Shapton GlassStones?
A. Normally, we recommend the HR Series. We recommend the HC Series in cases where the sharpener feels that they are not getting the best finish possible on their high carbon steel.
