Shapton Banner

The Shapton KUBO Diamond Reference Lapping Plate is a two sided reference lapping system designed to produce exceedingly flat surfaces in steel and sharpening stones.

Highest Quality

Shapton produces some of the highest quality ceramic water stones available. So when it comes to designing a lapping plate to flatten those stones, you would expect nothing but the best from them. True to form, they have produced the Diamond Reference Lapping Plate or DRLP.

Two Sides

With diamond abrasive embedded on a massive bronze body, the Shapton Diamond Reference Lapping Plate is a two sided reference lapping system designed to produce exceedingly flat surfaces on steel and sharpening stones. The A – Side or Stone Truing Side is used to flatten 500 grit to 30,000 grit Shapton Sharpening Stones. The B - Side or Reference Side is used to assist in the process of flattening blades.

Guaranteed Flat

Tested by outside Japanese government laboratories the DRLP is optically flat. The Stone Truing Side falls within a plus or minus 8 micron tolerance. The Referencing side falls within an incredible, plus or minus 3.5 micron tolerance. The DRLP’s ability to produce exceedingly flat tools and sharpening stones makes it an enormous aid in the sharpening process.

For Stones 500 Grit and Higher

Use plenty of water while lapping Shapton Stones and referencing blades on the DRLP. Never use the DRLP to flatten Shapton stones coarser than 500 grit or stones made by other manufacturers that are coarser than 1000 grit. To flatten Shapton stones coarser than 500 grit, use Shapton's Shapton Lapping Powder.

To flatten a blade, lap it briefly on the Reference Side of the DRLP. Observe the scratch pattern left behind to see where metal needs to be removed. Move to a coarse Shapton stone to remove the metal, then go back to the Reference Side of the DRLP to check your progress.

To keep your Shapton DRLP clean, use water and a scrub brush as needed. If the DRLP becomes particularly clogged, use Shapton Lapping Powder and the Shapton Lapping Disk for occasional heavy duty cleaning.

Sharpening Supplies is an authorized retailer of Shapton Stones.
