Tough Pink Aluminum Oxide
The Pink Double-Time Flattening Stone uses pink aluminum oxide as the abrasive compared to the original Double-Time Flattening Stone which uses green silicon carbide. This choice of abrasive was not made for aesthetic reasons. While it is true that pink aluminum oxide does give the stone a spectacular color, it is also a tougher and longer-wearing abrasive than green silicon carbide. The goal was to create a stone that would wear slowly and so stay flatter longer. In our early testing, the tougher but less sharp pink aluminum oxide cuts slower than the original. But both stones wear very slowly themselves, so whether the pink actually wears more slowly over time remains unclear.
The Pink Double-Time Flattening Stone uses 120 grit abrasive on the coarse side. The fine side uses 280 grit abrasive (the original uses 320 grit) to leave a fine finish on water stones. The slightly coarser grit of the fine side was chosen because aluminum grain tends to leave a smoother finish.
Limited Release Stone
The Pink Double-Time Flattening Stone is a limited-release flattening stone. We liked what we saw in our testing, so we wanted to see if the potential long-wearing benefits would interest other users. Right now it is only planned for a limited release, but we may add it to the permanent line if feedback for the stone meets our own testing.
