The Naniwa Japanese Waterstone Set is a value priced set of waterstones that perform like a high priced set. This set includes 3 stones that give you the 120, 1000 and 3000 grits.
Like traditional waterstones, we recommend soaking these in water prior to use.
Each stone measures 175 MM long x 55 MM wide. In inches the stone measures 6 7/8" long, 2 1/8 wide. This size offers a good balance of value and size. This size is good for most knives. The base provides plenty of knuckle clearance when sharpening knives and is solidly built for sharpening tools.
Stone 1 - 120 Grit Waterstone
This stone at 120 grit (gray) is very coarse so you can sharpen dull knives quickly. You will appreciate the fast sharpening of this stone.
Stone 2 - 1000/3000 Grit Combination Waterstone - This stone has a fine 1000 grit (red) and an extra fine 3000 grit side (tan). The 1000 grit side quickly refines your knife and is used after your coarse 120 grit stone. The 3000 grit side will put a very fine edge on your knife.

Q. Do I need to soak all of these stones in water before use?
A. Yes, all of the stones will benefit from soaking in water prior to use. The 120 and 1000 will need more water while the 3000 doesn't require much soaking beforehand. We do not recommend that you store them long term in water, only soak them before use.
Q. Will this work well for my Japanese knives?
A. Yes, waterstones are the traditional stones designed for the hard Japanese steels. These are designed and made in Japan for harder steels.
Q. I'm looking for a larger stone, what is the next step up?
A. Naniwa makes a grade of stone called the Naniwa Sharpening Stone. The Sharpening Stone is not only larger but uses a different bonding method that allows you to use the stones without prior soaking.
