The flat surfaces are pretty easy to understand. The coarse is used to sharpen dull knives, the fine further refines the edge and the ceramic is finer yet for that very polished edge. The ceramic corners with 3 different radii are a little less obvious. The 3 corners have varying radii of 1.6MM, 3.18MM, and 4.78 MM (you of course remember from geometry that radius is the length from the center of circle to the outside). Basically, this means that the corners have rounded edges that sharpen like 3.2MM, 6.36MM and 9.56MM round rods. The photo to the right will help illustrate this point. The rounded corners can be used like a honing steel to align your knife edge or like a sharpening rod to get in tight places such as the gullets of a serrated knife. The radii can also be used on woodworking gouges and other carving tools. Large black non-slip plastic handle for ease of use.
